Vimmerby is one of Sweden’s oldest towns and since the Middle Ages has been a centre for trade and commerce. This tradition has passed on into our own time, and today Vimmerby is very much alive as a commercial and service centre in the northern part of Kalmar County. The municipality has about 16,000 inhabitants.
At present, Vimmerby is going through a quick and exciting development phase. Over the past few years, many new businesses have been established in the municipality which has directly or indirectly created a considerable amount of new job opportunities and significant infrastructure investments. Vimmerby is also a tourist attraction that is developing strongly with one of the country’s most frequently visited places; Astrid Lindgren’s World, with around 350,000 visitors each year.
Astrid Lindgren’s literary achievements have made a considerable impression on Vimmerby. Vimmerby Municipality feels that it has a great responsibility to look after what Astrid Lindgren left behind. Our objective is to develop an “attractive Vimmerby”.
